Living History: Christmas on Appomattox Plantation December 12th City Point Area in Hopewell
Appomattox Plantation
On Saturday, December 12 a living history program will occur at the General Grant's Headquarters Unit of Petersburg National Battlefield. At 11:00, 1:30, and 3:30 p.m. guided tours will be conducted in which visitors will be transported back to 1858. Living historians will portray actual Eppes family members and the enslaved people who lived at City Point (present day Hopewell, Virginia) and will hear the thoughts of these people as they prepare for Christmas and an uncertain future. Outside the scheduled tour times, the living historians will continue to interact with visitors from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to ask questions and dress warmly.
Historically, the Grant's Headquarters Unit at City Point is well known to Civil War buffs and historians as being the center of Union operations during the Petersburg Campaign. However, the Eppes family occupied the plantation home for generations before the Civil War. Richard Eppes' description of the 1858 Christmas celebration is the most detailed of the antebellum Christmas journal entries. That Christmas, however, was less than one year away from John Brown's Harper's Ferry raid, two years away from the 1860 election which catapulted Abraham Lincoln into the Presidency, and less than three years away from the start of the American Civil War.
The General Grant's Headquarters Unit of Petersburg National Battlefield is located at 1001 Pecan Avenue in Hopewell. There is no fee for this program and no reservations are necessary. For more information, please call Park Ranger Emmanuel Dabney at (804) 732-3531 ext. 222. |

Blandford Cemetery Posted by petersburgwebmaster
(2083)
|
| Blandford Cemetery - In 1942, M. Clifford Harrison wrote in his book "Home to the Cockade City" that "when we Petersburgers are entertaining out-of- town guests and can't think of any other way to amuse them, we take them to Blandford Cemetery." Although Petersburg today offers a variety of other attractions, a visit to Blandford Church and Cemetery remains a must see excursion for visitors to Petersburg. The oldest marked grave in Blandford dates to 1702, and the 189 acres cemetery, now owned by the City, contains graves from the Revolutionary War ( Major General William Phillips, British citizen and commander of the British troops during the 1781 "Battle of Petersburg." - buried in secret by Benedict Arnold) and many civil war casualties from both north and south. Blandford Cemetery is now being maintained and restored through the efforts of the Historic Blandford Cemetery Foundation, Inc. who's website at http://www.hbcf.us/ provides a wealth of information about the cemetery, the church, and tours. Below are several photographs of Blandford:
